Sporting loses to Genk

Kasper Schmeichel

On Saturday evening, April 20, Sporting traveled to Genk to defend their leading position in the Champions' Play-Offs. The unfortunate Thorgan Hazard was replaced in the starting lineup by Francis Amuzu, Federeico Gattoni replaced the suspended Zeno Debast. RSCA lost 2-1 in Limburg.

The home team put pressure on the Mauves from early in the match. And Genk also got chances. Initially through a weak shot by Patrik Hrošovský, later with more danger from attempts by Tolu Arokodare and Zakaria El Ouahdi in just five minutes. The opening goal finally came after fifteen minutes of play. Arokodare found the net after all, 1-0 for Genk. The rest of the first half also belonged mainly to Genk. Bilal El Khannouss and Mujaid Sadick threatened, but the score remained unchanged.

After the break, RSCA started with Thomas Delaney between the lines instead of Theo Leoni. Sporting gradually came more into the match, with an attempt by Dolberg, among others, and also a header by Gattoni that went just over. For a moment, RSCA also seemed to be on the verge of leveling when Francis Amuzu cut down and lashed out, but his kick exploded on the far post. But there were also opportunities on the other side. First for Zakaria El Ouahdi, and then also for Matías Galarza and Patrik Hrošovský whose efforts Kasper Schmeichel had to save. With 15 minutes to play, the RSCA finally came level. Anders Dreyer gave it a try with his famous left foot, and his kick from outside the box went into the back of the net. Unfortunately it didn't stop there. In the final phase, Killian Sardella had the ball kicked in the arm in the box, and the referee pointed resolutely to the spot. 2-1 from penalty, RSCA goes home pointless.
